Favourite Football Grounds
Apart from our own ground what is everyone's favourite football ground? This can be worldwide. Would be nice to pick up some ideas.

Re: Favourite Football Grounds
Boundary Park - I hate that place.

Wasn't very wet when I decided to cycle from Manchester, where I was living at the time...

Stopped off at a pub where three blokes reminisced about George Best - not about his football, but about his generosity in buying whole pubs rounds all night.

Exited into the longest and heaviest downpour ever, still miles from the ground.

Rained all the way there, rained for the half hour the ko was delayed by because of train troubles. Can't remember which bits had a roof, but I wasn't under it. Rained for the entire match. Rained all the way back (my life was saved by an Asbach or three - that git George Best wasn't around to pay for them, though).

And their cheating plastic pitch had a very weird bounce in this downpour, which is the real reason behind the 6-0 score. We did them 3-0 in the home leg, iirc, which is all the support this argument needs.

Not actually been to Goodison but judging by comments on here I'll definitely try and go. Went to St. James's Pk when we drew 0-0. They should add that ground to the three peaks challenge!! Disappointed with atmosphere there though

Re: Favourite Football Grounds
Fair enough Lenscap. I get the locationas I'm from near there, but the pitch is crap and last time I was there it had nothing there. It could be any small town/village ground.

FWIW my favourite was always the old St James' park at Newcastle when it was terraced.

Yeah was up there for 6-0 and back up there a few weeks later only to lose 3-0 and we were just as bad . Did eventually get a 1-1 draw up there and they got a dubious penalty, needless to say not my favourite away ground.

Nice post. I agree on Goodison, one of the best with old school feel. I like how it simply says "The People's Club" on one of the stands. Instead of saying "Emirates", for example.

Grounds on this thread are being rated on all sorts of criteria - atmosphere, location, facilities or lack of, memory of a particular match or matches.

I like the Dripping Pan at Lewes because it's a historic ground (1885) in a picturesque location nestled in the South Downs. I appreciate it's not the best of grounds based on other criteria.

I remember going to Roker Park, must have been early nineties? Maybe the year we were promoted with the toon.

I have NEVER felt as cold as I did that day. The drabbest of drab 0-0 too if I remember rightly?

The Dripping Pan is crap for non-league. What's to like about it?

Used to like the old Stamford Bridge before the Russian for some unknown reason.

Re: Favourite Football Grounds
Between 1963 and 1984 my dad and I managed to visit every ground in the old Football League. Inspired by the Reynolds News Sunday edition double page team photos, we set out to do the whole 92. Fortunately he was a railway man and we enjoyed discounted travel. He was also a Spurs supporter but I never held it against him. I retain lovely memories from this time.

Apart from pre legoland Boleyn, the two grounds I always enjoyed visiting were Goodison Park and the old Baseball Ground at Derby. The pitch at the latter resembled a cabbage patch from about November onwards but in the days of Clough it had a great atmosphere, as did Everton, even if your view was sometimes interrupted by a pillar. Traditional grounds with the crowd close to the pitch and surrounded by rows and rows of Victorian terraces.

I also always enjoyed visiting Villa Park, St Andrews, WHL, Highbury, Roker Park, Anfield (pre Kop gentrification) and Main Rd too.

Winner of the bleakest, freeze ya balls off mid-winter prize is shared by Brunten Park, Carlisle and Boundary Park, Oldham.

Worst pie award goes to Vale Park, Port Vale (1973). Unedible and only good for throwing at the oppposition and patrolling plod behind the Goal.

Most intimidating ground: The old Den.

These generic soulless bowl stadiums they keep building today, including our own at Stratford, are a disaster for me.
